Product Testing - Embedded Systems

An embedded system is a computer system designed to perform one or more dedicated functions, often with real-time computing constraints. It is embedded as part of a complete device which often includes electrical and mechanical components. By contrast, a general-purpose computer, such as a personal computer (PC), is designed to meet a wide variety of user needs. Embedded systems control many electronic devices commonly used today.

Embedded systems range from portable devices, such as cell phones and MP3 players, to large stationary installations like traffic lights, factory controllers, or security systems. The complexity of an embedded system varies from simple, with a single microcontroller chip, to very complex with multiple processing units, peripherals and networks mounted inside a large chassis or enclosure.

Embedded systems may contain one or more processing units, usually consisting of microcontrollers or digital signal processors (DSP). The key characteristic of an embedded system is being dedicated to handle a particular task, which may require very powerful processors. The choice of processors is based on the features and requirements for the product.

Microipsys has designed and tested a wide range of embedded systems, from simple to very complex, for a variety of clients and applications. This often requires using or developing specialized tools and techniques for testing specific features within the embedded system.
